GODSHILL GAMBOL

REPORT
The Quiz Walk is an event we hold with the Isle of Wight
Ramblers and it has been running in its present form for 6 years.
Our chosen area was centred on Godshill and even though it
was the busiest time of the year we were able to find a route that avoided the visitors.
We did most of our planning during the very hot spell, but luckily there were
no long climbs involved.
The venue was the Scout Hut. It was being used as a base by
some mainland scouts. We were told that they would be out by 9.30 am . But when
we arrived they were still having breakfast and the smell of bacon was very
tempting ! Their vehicles filled
the car park, so thanks to everyone for parking on the main road.
We had a very good entry of 13 teams. Thanks to all of you
for turning out.
Our clues were a mix of cryptic and straight forward and as
usual they caused some debate at the finish. A quick analysis showed that most
teams got most clues and no clue proofed too difficult. So about right!
On previous walks we've included some General Knowledge
questions for teams to ponder as they covered the route. But a little bird told
us that people were using their mobile phones to find the answers on the
internet !
This time we included two Brain Teasers. Glad to say that
most orienteers brains are in good working order as most teams worked them out.
Here they are for you to try (answers below).
1. Who does this chronological sequence
represent ?
2. Fill in the missing numbers
17 19 -- 29 37 41 -- 47 53
We continued the idea of having two maps and allowing teams
to choose. One map had the approximate position of the clues marked on it. The
other was blank and the team had to work out clue positions by using grid
references. Out of a possible total of 60 points 2 were added for using the
³hard² map and 2 deducted for choosing the ³easy².
Congratulations to the Wintarn Team as winners ( planner's family,
but no collusion here!). In the father and son contest between Glyn and Daniel Williams,
son came out on top. But only after father had stopped son going the wrong way
at the start.
All in all a good day out enjoyed by everyone.. So we are
encouraged to arrange another quiz walk, same time next year. If you would like
to suggest a venue please contact us. We look forward to seeing more of you
then. Finally, special thanks to Yvonne Curran who served up drinks and
biscuits to everyone
