HEADON WARREN

Planners Report

Headon Warren is a very interesting area although it is quite small (only 1km from end to end) there is an abundance of features so finding control sites is fairly easy but putting all the legs together is a bit more of a challenge.

The Yellow course used most of the major and distinct paths on the higher ground and proved quite straightforward.  The Orange was also based on paths but included the less distinct ones on the lower (northern) side of the map with a couple of controls just off the path.  The Light Green and Green used the whole map but in order to get the distances legs needed to criss-cross the area with the ensuing climbs and also the use of a second master map for the Green course so enabling the whole area to be used twice. I was surprised that no one on the Green course marked down the extra paths as this made running a lot easier.

The main problem that competitors had was the heavy going through the heather and also dehydration due to the unseasonably hot weather which affected decision making and also leading to a few retirements.

I think everyone seemed to enjoy the event and I enjoyed planning it!
